First look at the 65 Federal Street tower
We love transforming property ideas into reality and recently we’ve been involved in an international design competition with ICD Property, a Melbourne developer.
They launched an exciting design competition for a new tower in Auckland’s CBD.
The finalists included Warren and Mahoney, Cox Architecture, Zaha Hadid Architects, Elenberg Fraser, and Woods Bagot.
Each of the teams was asked to complete two versions of their design, one following current city Unitary Plan rules and one version that could be built given more open planning parameters.
ICD bought the parking building at 65 Federal St, corner of Kingston St, from SkyCity Entertainment Group Ltd in May for $40 million. For a 1641m² site, that works out at $24,375/m². When the sale went through in May, Colliers capital markets national director Peter Herdson said high profile apartment & hotel development sites in the CBD had sold for $20-22,500/m². The winning design for 65 Federal Street was designed by Woods Bagot (Australian architects) and peddlethorp (New Zealand architects). Below is an indicative illustration of the tower, due to complete in 2022.
Woods Bagot principal and design lead Peter Miglis said during his pitch in June that the design, “is a strong, city-defining tower with an elegant silhouette that is enduring for the skyline of Auckland and provides a companion to the city’s iconic Sky Tower” – TVNZ
