Worthy of special mention was Greenstone’s ability to work with every stakeholder in the project in a way that made people feel they had been heard and appropriately consulted with. Ideas

NZMA is a renowned cookery school, as well as delivering hospitality and business training. The purpose for this project was to combine two previous and smaller tertiary education campuses in Panmure and Auckland City. They discovered that there would be efficiencies gained by combining these campuses and they would get an increase in capacity by designing a purpose built facility that maximises the use of space.

The location of the new facility was specifically selected for its centralised location and immediate proximity to many forms of public transport, ensuring students are able to access the facility with minimal inconvenience from all of Auckland, while minimising the impact of additional vehicles on the local roads. Greenstone Group was engaged for the project and design management of the development of NZMA’s newest campus.

Transformation

The design allows for future expansion both horizontally and vertically as the company grows. As part of the initial design strategy and value management process, Greenstone identified areas on the ground floor and level 1 for future expansion. The areas identified on level 1 have been future-proofed with timber structure floors and services have been future-proofed for expansion into these areas in future stages.

The result that Greenstone achieved far exceeded our client’s expectations and resulted in NZMA winning an Excellence award in the education category at the Property Council 2014 awards.

Reality

The success of the project came through innovative design to transform the existing empty industrial warehouse space into a comfortable, functional and visually stunning learning and social environment. The internal architecture combines the existing hard wearing interior building structure with refined, warm and modern / wall / ceilings / and cabinetry finishes displaying a fine balance of old and new materiality working together.

The building provides and outstanding learning environment for students studying hospitality, cookery and business training. The new facilities provide state of the art commercial kitchen training facilities along with an operating café / restaurant to give students real life work experience while in a controlled environment. Fully equipped with the latest facilities, NZMA boasts brand new commercial kitchens, barista stations, a student-run café and spacious restaurant and bar training areas as well as upgraded existing staff facilities. For business students, up-to-the-minute computer classrooms and a large cyber suite complete the package.
