This award winning two-storey tertiary education Engineering and Trades Facility at Waikato’s Institute of Technology was delivered over two stages, and completed in July 2014.
A major transformational change for the faculty, this project utilised the opportunity to redefine how its specialised curriculum is delivered. Greenstone Group’s role was to facilitate the process of defining how the individual schools within the facility will operate, then ensure these definitions work within the project cost effectively and within the required completion time.
Brought on board in 2012, Greenstone Group has established a strong rapport with Wintec and the design team. This relationship has since led to an expansion of our role to include full project management services. Greenstone Group took the lead and outlined a project delivery plan addressing Wintec’s global needs, developing a programme that is ambitious but achievable.
In managing the design team, Greenstone Group elected to work with separately-staged building consent applications. The first of these consent applications to the Hamilton City Council was accepted without complication, which allowed work on the site to commence ahead of schedule. The necessary alterations and finer details this change entailed were also solved and managed by Greenstone Group.
Additionally, Greenstone Group provided risk management advice and services on this project. We provided our own detailed review of sub-trade packages rather than relying on those conducted by the main contractor. Although this is a continuous commitment, we view it as necessary, as well as something that sets Greenstone Group apart.
Throughout the project we maintained a comprehensive system of formal and informal communications with Wintec, regulatory authorities and other parties. This enabled our client to make informed and intelligent decisions, and has brought internal and external stakeholders to the project.
The value added by Greenstone Group has been acknowledged by Wintec through their invitation to provide project management services for the renovation of the Hub at their Rotokauri Campus and its success in receiving five awards at three different events, including the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards, the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards and the Property Council New Zealand Property Industry Awards.
